Teej – The Monsoon Festival

On the occasion of Teej Celebration we welcome the monsoon season. It is the symbol of joy which indicates the end of pricking heat all around. Taking the advantage of the sexy rainy weather, the girls and women enjoy this day by swinging and singing on the swings (Jhula) or in the rain. Although it is primarily the day of celebration for girls or women, but in today’s modern era, Men too enjoy the Swings with their spouse or loved ones.

Moreover, Teej celebration is also bound to some rituals and spiritual beliefs; hence the ladies initiate the celebration with all the customs and devotion. Along with this, everyone shares the delicious Ghevar – the festive special sweet.

This day is celebrated on Tritiya of Shukla Paksha during the month of Shravan (July-August) & the total number of days of celebration is different at different places. This festival of rain and swings is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Parvati who is believed to get married to Lord Shiva on this auspicious day.

History of  Teej Celebration

Teej is considered to be the definition of true love between the married couple. All the married women get dressed in an adorable manner & then pray for long life of their husband. Along with this, they also pray for providing the purification in their relationships. Also, the unmarried women pray to Goddess Parvati to help them find a perfect life partner.

This Indian festival is the start of monsoon, but there is a spiritual belief and legend behind every celebration on Indian land.

Hindu mythology describes that when the first wife Goddess Sati of Lord Shiva was dead, he withdrew himself form virtues of love. Then the reincarnation of Goddess Sati took birth on earth named- Goddess Parvati. It took 108 births, long time fasting, determination and strong devotion for Goddess Parvati to impress Lord Shiva again & convince him for marriage. Finally, the Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati united once again and the world started celebrating this day as the festival of Teej.

Traditions of Teej Celebration | Statewise Celebration

The idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is worshipped for the whole night. Women keep fasting with the belief that their love bonding with their husbands could groom up same as these deities. The newly married women spent the day with their parents & then, come back at Raksha Bandhan after around 8 days. They also decorate their hands with Mehndi & sing the holy songs while on swings (Jhoola).

A lot of fairs and cultural events are being organized at various places like in Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh.

Location wise, it is celebrated as Hariyali Teej in North India. It is celebrated as Teeyan in Punjab and is fully dedicated to the gaze of the rainy season.
