Mother’s Day Celebration: A True Tribute to all mothers

Mother’s Day celebration is the event honoring all mothers, for their motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence in society. It is an appreciation towards mothers and mother figures for their efforts and contributions. It is a tribute to all mothers for all their love and support to us and our society, ultimately the world.  Mother figures may include stepmothers, friend’s mother, relatives, mothers-in-law or a lady guardian. The celebration date of this festivity varies depending on the country.

It falls on the second Sunday of May in many countries like Australia, Canada, and the United States. In the UK, this is celebrated exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday (Christian’s Festival).  Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, India, and Japan also observe this festivity on the same date. Since Mother’s Day celebration originated in the USA, various countries adopted the ways of celebration. However, the manner of Mother’s Day celebration varies in many countries. Whatever that, feelings and significance of Mother’s day is the same.

Ways of Mother’s Day Celebration

Mothers Day is the best day to celebrate the joys of having a mother for anyone. The Mother’s Day celebration may hold a lot of actions. The common celebration is to give Mother’s day cards, bunches of flowers and cakes and other eatables. Gifts of chocolate, jewelry, accessories, clothing, hobby equipment, and handmade items are also in vogue (common). Many children, themselves prepare a beautiful card to present it a day before Mothers Day. Some children like to accompany their mothers at her favorite breakfast, lunch or dinner either at home or a restaurant. Going for a movie with mother is a common way of celebrating Mother’s day. The persons, who stay away from home, make a particular call to their mothers/mother figures. Sometimes they send a greeting card to express their gratitude and love for them. In some countries, special prayer services are arranged in churches in honor of mothers.

Cultural Programs related to mother’s day are arranged especially in schools and women organizations. The idea behind such programs is to inspire children to pay due and true respect to their mothers. Mothers are also encouraged to spend quality time with their children and incorporate in them noble values and manners. India is a country of rich cultures and traditions where people give first place and priority to their mother. So, mother’s day celebration is of great importance for Indians

Origin & History of Mother’s Day Celebration

Greeks celebrated the occasion to honor Rhea (mother of the Gods). Mother’s day history also traces in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated. But a modern celebration of mother day attributes to two women of US — Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis.

Julia Ward Howe suggested that June 2 be annually celebrated as Mothers Day. She is also famed for her famous Civil War song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. She made an appeal to women and raised them against Mothers Day Proclamation, It was written in Boston in 1872. She made a lot of efforts for mother day to be celebrated officially.

Anna Jarvis is known as the Founder of Mothers Day in the US.  Anna Jarvis never married. She is also known as the Mother of Mothers. She worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers.
Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood. She vowed that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them.

When her mother died in 1905, she resolved to fulfill her mother’s desire of having a mother’s day. She sends carnations (a flower) in the church service. She felt that they symbolized a mother’s true love. Later, Anna along with her supporters made a struggle for an official declaration of Mothers Day holiday. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held Mother’s Day celebration in the memory of her mother.

 By 1911, Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in almost every state in the US. On May 8, 1914, a Joint Resolution was signed by President Woodrow Wilson designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then. Today Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries.  Millions of people over the world take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers. Thanks to them for their efforts.

Mother is a great person in our life without her we cannot imagine to have existed in this world. She is the person who makes our life so simple and easy with her caring love and support. A mother is a person who wipes your tears and always takes your side. Mother is always our very close and best friend. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family. And most of all, a mother is the person who always LOVES you no matter what you may have done. A mother’s smile toward you makes all day happy. A mother heart is like a rare jewel. Note that, all mothers are not the same but all mothers love their children and want to see them happy.

The real meaning is understood only when you become a mom and it is difficult to capture the definition in words. You will just know when you become one. Mother is a great and unique gift for us from God. We should be friendly with mothers. We should respect her. Mother prayers always make us a successful and happy person.
