About Christmas Holiday

Christmas is originated from the word “Christ” & “mass”. The Christmas Holiday is dedicated to the Jesus Christ which the Christians believe as the son of God. Nobody knows when Jesus Christ was born so they decided 25 Dec as his birthday as it was close to the winter solstice.

It is celebrated in all over the world mainly by Christians. You will be surprised to know that it is celebrated by billions of non-Christians too. There are many more popular christian festivals like Easter, Pentecost and Epiphany. Christmas is grown as the biggest commercial and cultural holiday rather than religious holiday in many countries like America.

The four weeks before the Christmas is known as the season of advent. It is the season when people are busy in the Christmas preparations like making decorative items or buying. Cleaning the home, preparing snacks, buying wreaths, writing letters and cards to their close ones etc. Not all Christians, but some people do prayers, meditation, fasting, study during the season of advent.

How Christmas Holiday is celebrated

Christmas is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm. People use to decorate their home with glittering stars, balls, ribbons and gift. Christmas tree is the most important part of this festive season. It is a triangular fir tree which is decorated like anything. Gifts, candies, sticks, sparkling balls, stars, shiny lights ribbons and what not. It has its own charm. Competitions are held between different areas of the city regarding the Christmas tree decoration.

Every christian family hang a star outside their home. A welcome wreath is also hanged on the welcome door. It means bringing prosperity and happiness. Exchanging of gifts and card takes place while enjoying the food and drinks. Christmas dinner is generally eaten in the middle of the day. It differs from place to place and family to family.

Christmas carols or songs make this festival more breathtaking. People go to the church and do prayers. In some church there is a tradition of singing carols by ligting candles.

Christmas day also have the tradition of Santa Claus. Santa Claus is the Saint Nicholas who is said to bring gifts to the children on the night before the Christmas i.e 24 Dec. He s potrayed as a white beard man, wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs. He is depicted as the person who give the present to the kind and good children flying from house to house on the sleigh which is carried by the reindeers.

There is a religious tradition in the Christmas celebration, that people who meet under the mistletoe must kiss, as it is considered as the a sacred symbol of vivacity. It blooms even in the winters. Mistletoe is declared as the symbol of love and hope of restoring fertility.
