International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration held on March 8 every year. It is also called International Working Women’s Day. The celebration intends to introduce a positive change in the status of women in the world. The festivity also focuses on helping women gain full and equal participation in global development.

The celebration also sees those men who honor women like their mother, sister, daughter or friend. In actual, the celebration started as a social and political event but as time elapsed, it lost its political flavor in some regions. And it became an occasion to pay tribute and love to women for their efforts and contributions similar to mother’s day. This celebration is also termed as civil awareness day, Anti-sexism day, Anti-Discrimination Day.

History Behind International women’s Day

The history behind women’s day celebration ranges a lot across the globe. It also has some controversies. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19 in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The event included rallies, procession, and organized meeting. The March 19 was chosen because it commemorated the day that the Prussian king promised to introduce votes for women in 1848.

In 1913, International Women’s Day was moved to 8 March. This day became the global date for International Women’s Day. Meanwhile, Russia women went on strike for ‘bread and peace’ in response to the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers in war. Consequently, Czar (king of Russia) and the provisional government granted women the right to a vote. Notably, that day was March 8th and it became custom to celebrate women’s day. Different countries have different story and history for women’s day to be celebrated.

In the year 1975, United Nation (UN) drew a global attention women’s concern. The UN called the year 1975 International Women’s Year. A conference on women was held that year.

In 1977, the UN General Assembly invited its member countries to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace.

Celebrations & Activities on International Women’s Day

The women’s day celebration holds a number of actions and performances. The main aim of celebration is to influence and attract the international community to put a commitment against violence towards women. The main focus of this day also includes encouraging and appreciating women. At the occasion, a variety of programs like seminars, conferences, and meetings are held by various educational and cultural organizations. In schools and other educational institutions, debates, presentations, speech, and other competitive activities are arranged. Women Parade is a common sound on this occasion. Children like to accompany their mother on dinners, breakfast, and meal.

Many global corporations also acknowledge this day by running their own internal events and programs. Leading educators, leaders, inventors, entrepreneurs, and television personalities are usually invited to speak at various events on the day. The idea behind these events often focuses on various themes such as innovation and problems of women & their solutions. In some countries, children bring gifts to their female school teachers. Also, women receive small presents from relatives, friends or family members.

It is especially celebrated to enhance the worldwide awareness about women for their rights, and efforts & contributions. Most of the business organizations, government, and non-government offices, educational institutions are closed at International women’s day. Generally, people wear purple ribbons during the celebration. Women are also given gifts by elders as a token of respect, love, and care.
